Bob haircuts for women over 50 are short to mid-length cuts that offer a chic, youthful look. There are endless ways of enhancing a bob haircut. Wavy, sleek, tousled, or funky—every style must suit a particular vibe and personality.
One of the classic and safest hair trends for older ladies in their 50’s to try is a bob cut. It’s versatile and customizable. Bobs are great to give oneself a younger-looking edge, plus it’s so much easier to jazz up!
Before getting a chop, ask for a type that works best on your hair and lifestyle. The face shape also plays a crucial part in identifying which is the best haircut to go for.
Annmarie Delgado-Prosch, a California-based stylist, shares her #1 hair tip. Always know what the maintenance is going to be.
“To maintain a nice clean shape, I recommend they come in every six to eight weeks. This could be a deal-breaker, especially if they aren’t ready to commit to the upkeep,” says Annmarie.
When asked about her most loved product, Annmarie mentions Davine’s all-in-one milk. Apply it before blow-drying sleek hair or before diffusing the curls.
If you’re over 50 and considering a bob haircut, then check out these pictures!
#1: Dimensional Lob with Balayage
Try a dimensional lob with a balayage if you want to transform your overall appearance. A lob haircut is a modern hairstyle that is stylish and popular, a longer bob essentially. A lob haircut will look flattering on your aging hair and pairs well with a dimensional balayage. A balayage is a freehand painting technique that gives you a very lived-in, low-maintenance color. Stick to medium or lighter shades if you want to maintain a youthful appearance.
#2: Chopped and Blonde
For women in their fifties, a bob can take 10 years off! Blonde is the perfect look for this age group as it will keep them looking on-trend and feeling fabulous. Blondes should opt for buttery rather than platinum tones. It helps soften those greys around the hairline and brighten up her complexion. Plus, going shorter reduces dry time, and no more need to fuss all morning with styling tools. To finish, I recommend using Wella Eimi Perfect Me Lightweight Hair Cream. It gives your hair a subtle shine and hold.
#3: 1960s-Inspired Razored Curly Bob
Try a 1960s-inspired razored bob for curly hair if you want a timeless look. Using a razor for the haircut will create texture and layers. Just be careful that you don’t overdo the razor as it could cause unwanted frizz!
#4: Inverted Curly Bob Without Bangs
Go for a new look with an inverted curly bob without bangs. Cutting off dead long lengths will be helpful to give your face an instant lift. It will also give your hair a more youthful appearance. A shorter length will give your curls new life and bounce for a perfect style, if you are in your fifties.
#5: Before and After Sleek Bob with Bangs
These before and after pictures of a bob with bangs prove how a haircut and color can make women over 50 look younger! By warming up her base color to complement her skin tone, the new cut with bangs really brightened her up. Ask your stylist what cut and color can make you feel younger.
#6: Glossy Blonde Bob
A blonde bob is classy looking. This sleek and straight hairstyle is warn by many celebrities. Don’t forget to use a shine serum so you feel that you’re red carpet ready!
#7: French Bob for Thinning Hair
The French bob can be a perfect choice for women with thinning hair. The short ends make the hair feel and look thicker.
#8: Sleek Brunette Bob with Wispy Bangs
For women over 50, adding wispy bangs to a bob can bring out the eyes and soften the face. A sleek bob is a classic style and works great on medium to fine textures. Try a light gloss from Hairstory on your fingertips after you blowdry to add shine. This product works on all hair textures.
#9: Dirty Blonde Bob Haircut
A bob haircut is a great option for older women looking to freshen up their style. The dirty blonde helps keep a natural look while blending grey versus covering it completely. A bob haircut is always on-trend and never looks dated. Styling with a round brush to add volume and movement. Hold the style with a hard-hold hairspray.
#10: Vintage Bob with Bangs
A vintage bob with bangs is a short box bob perfect for women over 50 as it’s light and easy to wear and style. It suits most face shapes except for very squared or rectangular because of the angles of the box bob itself. The slight bevel at back makes it ideal for finer and flatter hair.
#11: Silver Textured Bob
If you’re a woman over 50 with fine hair, consider choosing this textured bob. The more vibrant it is, the more youthful it looks on you! For your love of short hairstyles, this is the ever-stunning silver textured bob that you must wear. The secret to getting this nice and cool movement is both dryer and diffuser. And, lock the moisture onto your strands with leave-in conditioner and volumizing lotion.
#12: Straight Bob with Glasses
For a lovely woman who’s in her 50s and can never leave her specs at home, you must go for this bob! This straight bob with glasses will make you stylish from any angle. Its bright shade does a superb job at helping the natural grey strands to blend in. For an additional touch that grants you a fresher look, never ever miss having subtle bangs, too.
#13: Flattering Asymmetrical Bob with Bangs
Of course, you can enjoy an attractive short, uneven bob hairstyle when you reach the 50s! This flattering asymmetrical bob with bangs allows you to have an eye-catching look. It features shorter layers to achieve volume, plus the long side bangs for a youthful edge. Find satisfaction from its unique dimension when you fuse blonde highlights and lowlights.
#14: Stacked Bob Hairdo
Consider opting for a jaw-length stacked bob hairdo that’s flattering on ladies aged 50. When styling, apply a mousse to your honey highlighted hair for added volume and texture.
#15: Simple White Bob with Bangs
This simple white bob with bangs is the perfect haircut to flaunt your grey locks with flair! The solid shade is full of glamour, working well on fine tresses. Keep the length right at the jawline to also maintain the hair’s shape, fullness, and volume.
#16: Salt and Pepper Pixie Bob
A pixie bob on a fifty-year-old is a great cut that’s not too short, yet can still pull off a bob. This lovely salt and pepper pixie bob is easy to style and it only needs a dab of texture for a finishing touch. It has some pops of grey and silver hues, creating a high contrast dimensional look. Now, that’s how you embrace your natural grey hair color.
#17: The Round Bob
Here’s a round bob that’s looking flattering on a woman over 50 who is going for a classic look. It’s a chop featuring gradual layers for such a dashing edge that doesn’t require too much styling.
#18: The Layered Bob for Fine Hair
This stacked and layered bob is perfect for women over 50 with fine hair. The layering and stacking will bring out more volume and fine locks. The more stacking you add, the more lively it turns out! Its stunning and sassy outcome works best on a length grazing the jawline and a chop offering bangs.
#19: Wispy Bob for Thin Hair
Women in their 50s tend to struggle with thin hair and a wispy bob is a great cut to consider. It’s always fun to explore a new look, so don’t be scared of a big chop and trying out a blonde balayage. This is the ultimate wispy bob for thin hair of a 50-year-old stunner. Aim for this wavy look by opting for a razor cut, adding details to this neck-length hair.
#20: Medium Length Wavy Bob
This is the perfect medium-length wavy bob hairstyle for growing out longer hair in your 50s. Your smooth, thin tresses will need more texture and dimension, so go for this look. A brunette balayage and color melt will provide you with what you ever needed and more!
#21: Shaggy Bob with Bangs for Fine Hair
Opt for a shaggy bob with bangs hair trend that surely grants you an ageless stylishness. This shoulder-grazing shaggy bob for fine hair is all about sophistication. If you have the golden tones of blonde and are ready for some layers and bangs, this style will suit you perfectly.
#22: Feathered Long Bob
When choosing a bob haircut in your 50s, a feathered bob is still a trendy choice. This is a lovely shoulder-length feathered long bob that screams volume and movement. Here’s a tip—don’t let your blonde locks fade its vividness, so use a purple shampoo.
#23: The Graduated Bob
This is a modern-day bob with easy maintenance, and the layers really complement this look. The shape coming into the back of the neck sets the look off with the length being longer around the front. It really shapes the face, and as the hair is thick, the shape takes a lot of weight out to reduce drying time and makes it easier to style at home.
My favorite product is the Revlon 10-in-1 spray which acts as a leave-in conditioner and helps reduce humidity. It smoothens the hair and makes it last longer. I finish off with the Wella reflections oil to add smoothness and shine.
As the hair can’t be tied up, you do need time in the morning to be able to style the hair. Blow-dry and straighten it. It’s not practical for women with a busy lifestyle, although once done, it looks amazing.
#24: A Youthful Short Bob
Q&A with style creator, Megan Longmore
Salon Owner / Senior Hair Stylist @ Opal & Rust in Kirkland, WA
How would you describe this look?
This look is a short textured bob for women over 50. It’s a great haircut and style for any woman over 50 wanting to grow out a pixie cut or just wants a change but doesn’t want to go too short. What I love about this look is the versatility in styling options and how a shorter style like this can bring out personality and confidence!
Any advice for someone considering it?
For clients considering this bob style, it’s a great way to make a statement while still being soft and professional! It’s great for anyone with fine to medium hair types and clients who love playing with visual texture in their haircuts.
I recommend using styling products like spray wax, texture spray, or a volumizing spray or cream! You can apply a volumizing product and blow dry for soft volume or add some texture with flat iron curls and use a spray wax for that beachy look! With simple steps, this style is versatile, easy, and fun!
#25: The Inverted Bob
This bob cut is feathered, layered, timeless, and very easy to style.
This is always a great go-to cut when you just don’t know what to do with your hair anymore. It’s virtually effortless to style (if cut right to the client’s texture and wave pattern if there is any).
Also, make sure you do your homework about the stylist cutting this because they are quite challenging.
I often do this bob cut on women who live a very active lifestyle whether it be new moms or moms with young children, women who like to wash and go, women who love to work out a lot or spend a lot of time outdoors, and most of all something simple but looks like a million dollars.
Depending on your hair type, I like to blow dry with a bit of a root booster, and my personal favorite is Redken’s velvet gelatine!
#26: Classic Bob Cut for Silver Hair
Choose a classic bob shape and embrace your grey and you’ll be happy you did. Lots of older women are tired of the constant touch-ups at the root, so why not go grey? Request a very heavy highlighting to remove the color. Be aware this will be an extensive coloring process to get you to grey, and will take time and money. But once achieved it will be worth it, and your roots won’t show regrowth as readily. The bob cut suits the grey shade wonderfully.
#27: A Flattering Lob
If you’re looking for a versatile cut, talk to your stylist about a flattering lob. The ‘long bob’ looks sleek and professional when worn straight, and can transform into flirty and fun when styled with soft waves. Women over fifty often find their hair isn’t as thick as it used to be. With proper texturizing, this cut helps the hair look and feel fuller.
#28: Blunt Bob Cut for Ladies 50 and Up
Ladies 50 and up should try a blunt bob cut. Blunting the bottom length makes your hair appear thick and healthy. This modern style looks great on most face shapes and can be curled for more volume. A low-maintenance style is quick to dry and only needs to be cut about every 6 weeks.
#29: Sleek Bob with Bangs for 50-Year-Olds
A sleek bob with bangs is an instant anti-aging haircut for 50-year-old women! This length and fringe give off a youthful appearance, while these bangs help conceal your lines and wrinkles.
