Short haircuts for older women create flattering and easy-to-create hairstyles. The chop ranges from pixie to bob-length, exposing the neck and shoulders for a bold, modern look.
Sarah Piel is a haircut specialist from San Diego, CA. She notes that short hair is only low-maintenance if it’s cut right. “Usually, short-length cuts are wash-and-wear or might require very minimal styling,” she adds.
Look at all factors to consider before getting a fresh haircut. That includes hair characteristics, face shape, body proportion, and your lifestyle!
Even if this look is easier to manage, regular maintenance is essential. Ask your stylist how often you must visit the salon for hair trims.
The right hairstylist will give you great results. When looking for one, make sure to check their portfolio. Piel states, “You’ll be able to tell whether or not you’ll get the cut you’re looking for by their previous work.”
In case you’re indecisive about getting a big chop, remember that everyone can have short hair. “Go for it. Hair grows,” Piel points out.
Here are images of the most popular short haircuts for older women. Pick the one you’d love to try!
#1: Professional Chic
This look is professional and chic but can also be worn casually and edgy with little effort due to the fun texture! You can play with this style in many different ways. My favorite thing about this cut and style is that it’s beautiful, weightless, easy to maintain, and versatile.
It takes little effort to maintain as long as you don’t mind regular visits to the salon between four to six weeks. This is a good option for anyone with fine to medium hair texture. It’s also good for older women from a sporty to a professional lifestyle. No matter what kind of life you lead, it’s simple to take care of and style!
#2: Messy and Choppy Straight Hair
Consider a short straight messy cut. As you get older, your aging hair texture changes. I suggest trying a short pixie and French bob style with a fun choppy texture to create movement. It will also add softness to your hair. This style works great on pear, oval, and long face shapes.
#3: Grey Textured Graduated Bob for Women Over 60
This look is a textured graduated bob with slight layering to create dimension and movement around the face, especially when the hair is pushed forward. It’s the ideal hairstyle for women over 60 with grey hair. I cut at a 45 degree angle to create the base, then layered the top and gave her an edgy fringe. After blow drying, I took out some weight by using some texturizing techniques to create movement.
It’s most flattering on a heart-shaped face and on someone that has a narrow chin, but again, a skilled stylist should be able to create this look on any face. You can personalize the look with a full fringe or a side fringe to cater to the face shape. Young professionals or mature women love this look. I feel it empowers them.

#4: Short Pixie Hair with Choppy Bangs
Try short pixie hair with choppy bangs if you want to add texture to your hair. Texture can help add body and edginess to short hair. Style using a wax or a paste for added separation and texture.
#5: Sleek Bixie with Highlights and Lowlights
Give your sleek bixie dimension with highlights and lowlights. If your natural color is blah, add some warm brown lowlights. Add blonde highlights, too, to enrich your shade and help hide your grey. You’ll want to leave your layers longer for a sleek shape that will be the perfect canvas for color. If your layering is too short your color and cut will appear choppy and not smooth. If you don’t like hair on your face, the longer lengths can be worn back or tucked easily for a clean shape.
#6: Swept-Back Pixie Hairstyle
Try the easy hairstyle of a swept-back pixie. Aging hair can become ornery and hard to care for, so why not cut it off? The cute short bangs and layers will dry quickly and will stay put. You can simply use your hands to dry your style, pulling a few bangs forward for softness. All you will need is a bit of gel or hairspray, and your style is ready. Keep in mind short hair will need to be cut often, about every 4-5 weeks.
#7: Very Short Asymmetric Cut with Shaved Lines
If you’re looking to modernize your asymmetrical pixie, try adding in a shaved design. It will switch things up. Make sure to go to a stylist that has a portfolio of designs they’ve done. That way, you’re working with a stylist that is most comfortable with it. You also want to decide on a design that is so simple that it won’t take too much attention from your haircut. But it’ll still give enough of a “wow” factor when you’re out and about.
#8: Red Balayage Bob with Blonde Accents
Dress up your style in a red balayage bob with blonde accents. A bob with longer layers is beautiful on its own, but add some red color with highlights and it will pop. The best way to achieve the color is to have your stylist use foils for the blonde and apply the red base color between them. A sealer or toner might be needed after that for the perfect blend. To maintain your shape and color you’ll need to visit the salon about every 6 weeks.
#9: Short Angled Pixie with a Side Part
You should try a short angled pixie with a side part if you’re not sure how to wear your straight hair. A tapered back leading into longer layers on top will fall in easily for you. Try blow drying backward with a medium metal barrel round brush. Then, utilize a side part for lift and interest. A short pixie will work on most face shapes and if you like a softer look make sure the ears are left slightly covered.
#10: Tapered Pixie with Choppy Layers
I often get told by clients that they want to go shorter but don’t want to look “old”. I always reply by telling them that short hair doesn’t mean old hair. Through my years of experience, I have realized that they want their short hair to look current. I generally suggest a pixie cut such as this one. The way that it lays and the clipper detailing keeps this cut looking fresh and trendy.
#11: Concave Bob with Micro Bangs
Try a concave bob styled with micro bangs. If you are an older woman and want to stay with the trends, adding a pixie bang is a great way to do that. This look is a quick and easy style in the morning. Use a round brush to create a nice rounded look with volume on the top.
#12: Long Pixie Undercut on Thin Hair
A long pixie undercut is great for thin hair. If you are worried about your thinning hair, ask your hairdresser to give you long layers. Then ask him/her to keep it tight around the ears and nape. This will give you the most volume on the crown of your hair.
#13: Low-Maintenance Bob with Soft Swoopy Layers
A low-maintenance bob with swoopy layers is a perfect style for older women. Ask your hairdresser for a lot of layers for your bob haircut. This will give you tons of texture and height, making this look easy to style every day.
#14: Slicked Back Pixie on Dark Brown Hair
A slicked back pixie on dark brown hair is great if you have extra thick or thin hair. This is a lower-maintenance haircut, saving you time on blow-drying and styling. Give it a nice shiny finish by using the Redken workable hairspray.
#15: Highlighted Bob with Angled Layers
A highlighted bob with angled layers is a haircut ideal for a woman who wants hair to compliment her face. Any bob shape will naturally move forward. It creates weight and movement around the chin and neck. Highlights right on top can feature the overall shape of the angled bob.
#16: Silver-White Haircut with Stacked Layers
If you want to go shorter, a stacked or graduated shape works well to build up weight in your hair. For a softer look, ask to keep the shape below your hairline at the nape of your neck. Layering will give movement while also creating volume. And both are great for finer hair types. Keep your silvery locks vibrant by using anti-brass shampoos. These help to reduce yellow tones but always use them sparingly.
#17: Messy Crop Cut with Feathered Layers
Consider a messy crop cut with feathered layers as your new style. Short layers brushed away from your face can be very uplifting to your features. Another bonus about having a short cut is that it’s easy to manage. You’ll want to blow dry the feathered layers with a small round brush for height. To maintain your cute style, visit your salon about every 5 weeks.
#18: Short Feathered Hair with Razored Layers
Enjoy the texture of short feathered hair with razored layers. Using a razor is a great way to enhance the natural movement in your hair, and adds space and lightness to the ends. If you have a wave in your hair this cut will make it easy to utilize it. Try drying your hair with your hands, lightly manipulating it backward. Pull a few pieces forward for a bang and you’ll be styled in no time.
#19: Short Wash-And-Wear Grey Pixie
Try a short grey pixie if you’re looking for a wash-and-wear hairstyle with a modern and youthful edge. If you’d like a little more shine and definition in the layers, try a hair balm like Cult and King Balm.
#20: Silver Voluminous Round Wedge Cut
Look naturally beautiful with a silver voluminous round wedge cut. A wedge cut has soft layers that accentuate and frame your face. I recommend this cut for thicker hair, thinning out bulky areas so the cut can sit correctly. Don’t forget to upkeep your cut by visiting the salon every couple of months.
#21: Ear-Length Brunette Haircut with Blonde Highlights
An ear-length brunette haircut with blonde highlights is a classic and may be the perfect look for you to try this year. This style needs to be cut more frequently than most, but it’s worth it for all the heads you’ll turn! This cut works best with straight to wavy hair.
#22: Textured Pixie with Razor Cutting
You should try a textured pixie with razor cutting if you are searching for a great short hairstyle. I love to use a feather razor because it gives your style longevity and a more interesting shape. Take the leap to short hair and inspire others and the style icon. Get ready to party by adding a textured wax and jazzing up your razored pixie.
#23: Stacked Bob with Side Bangs for White Hair
A stacked bob paired with side bangs is a striking, yet classic look. The cut is blunt and gradually layered on the nape of the neck to create a rounded, voluminous bob look. The shape of the cut gives natural-looking volume and the high-end style will make you look younger, even if you have white hair. Styling should be minimal effort, mousse and blow drying with a round brush will add and hold the volume.
#24: Short Tapered Cut with Tight Curls
A short tapered cut with tight curls is a high fashion, yet very wearable, subtle look. If you are a fan of a pixie and want a more structured look, this is a great option! The tight curls can be placed with a strong curl cream and comb. Let your hair air dry or use a hood dryer, so you don’t use too much force of air. Do not overly style it as your hair can lose its shape and become frizzy. Remember, less is more!
#25: Voluminous Bob Cut on Natural Gray Hair
Show off your naturally gray hair with a voluminous bob cut. This signature hairstyle is a favorite among women with fine, thin hair. Use a dry texture spray to bring out your individual pieces of hair.
#26: Side-Parted Cropped Cut with Long Bangs
Try a side-parted cropped cut with long bangs if you want a fun, lady-like hairdo that’s also easy to style. Make sure you keep a styling balm on hand to combat frizz or flyaways for a more sleek look.
#27: Choppy Pixie with Tapered Sides
A choppy pixie paired with tapered sides will open up your face. The pixie haircut is best styled when blow-dried towards the front. Then, you’ll want to finish with a pomade or wax spray to bring out the texture.
#28: Very Short Hair with Wispy Layers
Very short hair combined with wispy layers is a great haircut if you have fine hair. Here we have a beautifully textured and choppy style. With the addition of bangs, this cut will bring out your eyes.
#29: Fuss-Free Spiky Pixie Cut
Consider a fuss-free spiky pixie cut and you can be ready in no time. Pixies are a stylish shape and should be dried with your crown moving up and forward. The short layers will make your life easier with no curling iron required. The pixie has become one of the most sought-after short haircuts, and you’ll see why when you try one.
#30: Short Messy Haircut with Side-Swept Fringe
Try a short messy haircut with a side-swept fringe if you’re middle-aged and looking for a spunky style. Use a pomade or wax spray to define the layers and add more volume to your style.
#31: Long Silver Pixie with Tapered Nape
Rock a long silver pixie with a tapered nape if you want a funky, yet easy-to-style haircut. Short layers will add texture and dimension to your natural silver hair. For a neat look, spray with wax spray then comb through with a wide tooth comb.
#32: Feathered Pixie Hair with Balayage
Bring life back to your fine hair with a feathered pixie haircut and balayage. Angled layers in short hairstyles create texture and body in your hair. Be sure to ask your stylist for styling products to take home with you.
#33: Blonde Pixie Bob with Thin Bangs
Go for a classic haircut with a blonde pixie bob with thin bangs. A bob with bangs is a perfect go-to cut for its low-maintenance styling. Having layers gives the perfect amount of volume and movement. Add a face frame for a touch of softness around your face.
#34: Short to Medium Textured Cut on Blonde Hair
Are you ready to experiment with a fun hairstyle that works with fine hair? Try layers and face-framing on a shoulder-length bob. Layers will visually give you a fuller hairstyle without sacrificing too much length.
#35: Jagged Ends and Full Bangs for Short Hair
Jagged ends and full bangs are another way to update your short hairstyle. The textured ends give your bob variation and a more natural-looking feel. Tapered bangs for your short hair help to accentuate your eyes and cheekbones.
#36: Wavy Silver Bob with Shadow Root
A wavy bob with a shadow root is one of the most popular styles. This short, silvery bob is vintage-inspired with the advantage of being a lower-maintenance blonde with the addition of a shadow root.
#37: Rounded Bob on Silver Blonde Hair
Rounded bob cuts on silver blonde hair give older women a softened style. A blonde hairstyle can really brighten up a dull complexion, while rounded layers soften square face shapes. Keep in mind that silver hair is the least maintenance for women who already have a lighter hair color naturally, or already have an abundance of silver hair. If you have darker hair you may have to deal with extra upkeep.
#38: Wash-And-Go Style for Salt and Pepper Hair
If you’re an older woman, consider a wash-and-go style for your salt and pepper hair. A short wash-and-go style is classic and easy to manage. Stay true to your natural hair color and rock your beautiful multi-dimensional gray and white hair color. Your sparky white strands will stand out and give your hair definition and depth. Going gray has never looked better.
#39: One-Length Bob with Off-Center Part
A one-length bob with an off-center part can make your hair appear thicker. A blunt weight line can add volume to the ends of your hair, making this classic short hairstyle great if you have fine, thin hair.
#40: Short Pixie with Long Layers for Fine Hair
If you want to freshen up your locks consider a short pixie with long layers for fine hair. A pixie with layers is great for giving your fine locks a boost. To get even more body at your crown, take some weight out to get a weightless lift when styling. Ensure your hair is trimmed every 4-6 weeks to keep your ends looking nice and neat.
#41: Short Layered Crop with Full Bangs
Choose a short layered crop with full bangs if you’re searching for a more mature style that still has a cool vibe to it. Short haircuts are usually easier to style, and with just the right bangs, you will be rockin’ your new short locks.
#42: Platinum Blonde Pixie with Shaved Sides
Embrace your masculine side with a platinum blonde pixie with shaved sides. This pixie cut is the perfect solution if you need an easier morning routine. Platinum blonde is a gorgeous addition that takes your cut to the next level.
#43: Honey Blonde on Bixie Hair
Try honey blonde on a bixie haircut if you’re looking to be more daring with your hair and you want to brighten up your warm skin tone. Short, layered hair styles like the bixie cut are perfect for adding more volume and texture to your fine hair.
#44: Heavily Layered Chin-Length Hair
When considering a heavily layered chin-length haircut, some things to consider are: are you willing to style your hair every day, and do you want to commit to short hair for a while? It can be one of the best short haircuts if you have finer, straight hair.
With layers, it will give texture and volume to your fine hair and create a beautiful, effortless style if you have straight hair. Make sure to really take into consideration any curls or waves that you may have in your hair, as that can make your day-to-day more difficult in a chin-length cut.
#45: Extra Short Choppy Haircut
If you’re an older woman, an extra short chic pixie is perfect to try if you are looking for a sophisticated look. If you’re starting to gray, the choppy cut brings more depth to the surface of your hair color without needing a giant color service. To style a choppy pixie, you may try pomades and waxes to help enhance any texture or help keep a more polished look.
#46: Jaw-Length Stacked Cut with Nape Undercut
A jaw-length stacked cut pairs well with a nape undercut for a youthful and edgy style. The contrast between the short lengths in the undercut and the longer lengths in the stacked bob makes for a visually interesting cut. Try adding some flat iron waves when styling for an extra fresh and flirtatious variation. Finish off your waves with a molding wax for enhanced texture and hold.
#47: Short Pastel Hair with Feathered Layers and a Wispy Fringe
Try feathered layers and a wispy fringe with your short haircut to add texture and movement if you’re looking for short haircuts for women over 50. Add a pastel color to create a more fun look that is perfect for any age. A fun pastel, wispy cut pairs great with sparkly earrings to make your look stand out.
#48: Short Piece-y Haircut with Highlights
You should try a short piece-y haircut with highlights. A pixie with highlights gives depth and dimension to your shape. The brushed-back layers uplift your facial features, and you can add some curl with an iron for an elegant look. The ease of styling this shape will appeal to ladies who would like a simple shape to blow out.
#49: Disconnected Purple Pixie with Side Bangs
Have some fun with a disconnected purple pixie paired with side bangs. Bold shades of lavender purple will make your strands pop for a playful look. If your hair fades quickly, try using only cold water when washing, and always use a color-safe shampoo and conditioner. Fashion colors need to be toned every 4-6 weeks.
#50: Voluminous Short Angled Bob
Always look classy with a voluminous short bob. An angled bob is a fantastic, statement-making haircut that requires some styling skill. Styling with a round brush and blow dryer will be necessary to get a voluminous hairdo. Trips to your hair salon every 4-6 weeks can be done to keep your cut looking fresh and on point.
#51: Neck-Length Stacked Cut with Waves
Try a wavy stacked bob that sits right above your shoulders. If you’re looking for a sophisticated style, and you’re a middle-aged woman, you might want to try a short slightly inverted bob. Ask your stylist what length will work for your texture and face shape. Adding curls that are directed backward will draw attention up and away from your face to create a lifting illusion.
#52: Jaw-Length Razored Bob with Layering
Try a jaw-length bob if you want an easy everyday style with a classic silhouette. When you have fine or straight hair, a layered bob will help add volume by reducing the excess length and adding movement to show off your silvery strands. If you’re considering this haircut, ask your stylist to use a razor to cut this perfect jaw-length bob and add in some long feathery layers.
#53: Deep Side-Part Wavy Bob
If you’re looking for glamorous hair, consider a wavy bob with a side part. For the prettiest waves, style your hair with some curling cream and a defuser. Take a trip to the beauty salon every 6-8 weeks to keep your cut in shape. Show your stylist an image of your ideal wavy bob and pick your perfect cut.
#54: Sleek Bob on Silver Hair
Be a trendsetter with a sleek bob if you have silver hair. There has never been a better time for an older woman to be inspiring and rock silver hair. A sleek bob will make your locks fashion-forward and trendy. Tone your silver to keep out yellow tones and use purple shampoo for at-home use.
#55: Mini Mullet Shag
Try a mini mullet shag for an eye-catching and easy hairdo! Perfect for your short tresses, a mini shag can be styled at home with little to no hair product.
#56: Side-Swept Short Pixie Haircut
If you’re sick of your long mane, try a side-swept short pixie haircut. Getting older is hard, but your hairstyle shouldn’t be. A pixie will boost volume and body, and your tresses will look their best. Opt for a soft side bang to personalize your perfect pixie.
#57: Short Bob with Bangs and Undercut
A short bob with bangs paired with an undercut is perfect for mature ladies looking for a snazzy short cut. Short hairstyles for older women can be youthful and fun. Ask your stylist to make your locks nice and textured for a blended look.
#58: Versatile Short Shaggy Cut
A short shaggy cut is an attractive and alluring hairstyle for older women. This hairstyle will add more body to your hair naturally but ultimately makes it much easier to manipulate your hair with much-needed shorter lengths. You’ll want to pick up a texture spray if you want to recreate the flowy, messy style like in the photo. This haircut is easy to style and maintain, making it one of the most popular short haircuts for older women.
#59: Dark Gray Wavy Inverted Bob
Try a wavy inverted bob for a head-turning style that is perfect if your hair is thick and unmanageable. Very easy to style, a wavy bob can enhance natural texture or be styled with product and a hair dryer.
#60: Graduated Razored Bob with Bangs
A graduated bob with bangs is a hairstyle you must try if you haven’t already and feel like your hairstyle has always lacked volume and shape. Ask your hairdresser to cut your layers with a razor to create all kinds of varying lengths and textures for your hair. This will also add volume but will ultimately make it much easier to style to create the volume you want to see in all the right places. You’ll want to straighten your mane with a flat iron if you don’t have naturally straight hair for this hair to lay down in place, which can be one of the more frustrating things about a graduated bob.
#61: Chin-Length Low Stacked Gray Bob
If you need a new style, you should consider a gray chin-length bob. Your gray hair will look regal with a stacked shape. Keep in mind the stacking is accented best if your locks are thick. You’ll want to blow dry section by section, starting with the underneath, using a round brush and some smoothing cream. If you are concerned about your face shape working with a stacked bob, relax, it compliments most face shapes.
#62: Edgy Shaggy and Textured Bob with Bangs
Try an edgy shaggy and textured bob paired with bangs for your next haircut! Great for older women, a bob with bangs can hide forehead wrinkles while still giving a shaggy, textured look.
#63: High Stacked Bob for Thick Hair
Try a high-stacked bob for thick hair this season to spice things up. This chic cut draws attention to the more flattering parts of your neck and face. If you’re looking to try something new, this bright and stylish cut will have you wishing you’d tried it sooner.
#64: Tousled Gray Pixie with Short Layers
A tousled gray pixie with short layers could be exactly what you need this month. This cut will add dimension to your hair as well as help your thinning hair look fuller. The layered pixie is a definite go-to if you want your hair to look thicker.
#65: Sleek Blonde Hair with Above-the-Shoulders Cut
Try sleek blonde hair with an above-the-shoulders cut if you want to turn heads. This cut works very well for framing your face in a sophisticated way. You will see that this cut can stand on its own when you receive many compliments.
#66: Piecey Texture on Short Pixie Hair
Consider short pixie hair paired with a piecey texture at your next salon visit. Ask your hair stylist for short layers with a tapered nape and short sides. Feathering will give your hair volume, and you can style it forwards or backward for versatility. As you age, short hairstyles can assist in making your hair appear thicker and can help you look younger too.
#67: Wash-And-Wear Short Spiky Hair
Whoever said short wasn’t easy never had short spiky hair you can wash-and-wear. This look is excellent for straight hair with fine to medium density. If you love a bit of edge and some styling goo, then bring some images to your next appointment to serve as examples for your stylist to craft the perfect pixie for you.
#68: Classic Bob with Piece-y Bangs for a Round Face
If you have a round face, you’ll look wonderful in a classic bob with a piece-y bang. The hair surrounding your face balances out roundness and camouflages unwanted fine lines. You’ll want to use a round brush and hair smoothing cream to polish your blow dry, so even your graying hair will appear shiny. A classic bob is a clean shape and should get trimmed about every 5 weeks.
#69: Short Spikey Pixie
This spikey pixie features a longer length on top for maximum versatility with minimal hassle for older women with fine hair. With this cut, you can keep your gray hairs and flaunt them confidently!
#70: Cute Short Curly Hairstyle
A short curly hairstyle is a great option for adding extra body and bounce to your curl pattern. Short hair helps keep curls from getting weighed down and dragging the face with it, creating a youthful appearance.
#71: Pixie Bob Haircut
Pixie bobs make for a great haircut for older women because they have many styling options. This classic cut can be styled sleek or messy if you want to feel young and trendy.
#72: Long Pixie Cut for Women Over 70
Women over 70 should try a long pixie cut! This cute crop works particularly well with aging hair due to its short length, layering, and texturizing.
#73: Pixie Shag Haircut
Pixie shag haircuts look stunning on older women. If you’re struggling to decide which cut to try next, this super cute crop is a great one to try!
#74: Long Pixie with Side-Swept Bangs
This is a classic shape with a little more weight and length on top and a closer, tapered length on the sides. This cut is so versatile – it can be messy and textured for a casual look or slicked down for a more refined, elegant look. This is a great transitional cut for straighter-haired clients who want to cut their hair short but aren’t ready for a full-blown Mia Farrow pixie. The longer bangs provide a little “security blanket,” and the sides could be left longer as well. The back should always be the shortest part of any shorter haircut this gives a beautiful silhouette.
Any face shape can wear short hair, and my only rule of thumb is the stronger the jawline, the longer the crown area should be for balance. There should always be a good amount of texture, more so for very thick hair to avoid the “cap” effect. A texture spray or texture powder on dry hair is usually all that is needed to style a great short hair cut!
#75: Classic Bob for Thick Wavy Hair
This look is a short A-line bob. The best thing about this look is its versatility. A waved bob is a new take on a classic haircut. It’s short, sassy, and can translate a wide age span! When considering short haircuts for older women you need to consider a few different aspects of your daily life. (With any haircut really.) In particular with a bob, think about the amount of time you are willing to give to styling your hair.
Considering a ponytail wouldn’t be possible. A waved bob is probably the best for any texture, thickness, or wave pattern. Starting with blow-dry, try Tigi small talk as a blow-dry cream. With curling, a 1″ curling iron is the best for bob-length haircuts, and Paul Mitchell’s Awapuhi ginger shine spray leaves your hair with shine and a light hold.
#76: Layered Graduated Bob
Consider a layered graduated bob with some fun highlights to accent the textured layers. This short hair can be playful, especially with the tousled layers. If you have very fine hair, use both Powder Dry Me and Puff Me. Using the two together creates lots of natural volume without having to tease. Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioners are always best to maintain the color and integrity of the hair. Many different hair textures and face shapes can wear a graduated bob. It’s a very versatile style.
#77: Blue Steel Pixie for Asian Women
I would best describe this style as a blue steel, disconnected pixie. My favorite aspect overall would be the creativity and unique originality involved with the entire color and haircut process. This was her first appointment with me and she really gave me the green light to explore her requests.
Consultations with new clients who wish to explore “outside the box” usually take me about 15 minutes so that we can really touch base on their hair history and possibilities. Also, it’s not very often that I get such requests from an Asian woman over 40 years old wanting a short haircut.
#78: Carefree Pixie With Glasses
This look was is designed to be carefree and soft. My favorite thing is how it enhances her features softly contours the structure of her face. The lines complement the features. Due to the natural texture and wave to the hair, this style is maintained with a light styling product for short wavy hair similar to Redken’s Ringlet, Ouidad’s Texture Taffy or a sea spray. If the hair has natural wave or texture, no blow dry is necessary. With the carefree nature of this style, cut and color, I find this is most flattering for women with naturally textured hair and sharp facial features. This look is no hassle, no fuss and always ready to go!
#79: Low-Maintenance Pixie
Opt for a pixie that’s edgy and low-maintenance but fun for all ages. The best thing about it would be that you can style it to look textured and messy or more flat and sleek. It works for women with very fine hair, but also thicker hair.
It’s a great look for women who don’t have much time in the morning to do much with their hair. All it needs is a quick blow dry and a little product, then you’re out the door! A heart or an oval-shaped face is ideal, but with a little bit of confidence, anyone can pull it off.
#80: Spunky Pixie for Women Over 50
A spunky pixie is one of the best short hairstyles for women over 50 who are busy and need a fairly low-maintenance look! From the color to the cut, style time is minimal and it’s super versatile. The rooted color lets you go longer between sessions so you’re not in the salon every four weeks for color. It’s young, spunky, and works well for any lifestyle! It’s great for a fast style that’s still trendy and you aren’t spending an hour on your hair in the morning. It’s quick and fun, but still a put-together look!
#81: Easy to Style Short Wedge Bob
My favorite thing about this short bob haircut is that it’s timeless! Even with all the constantly changing styles, this one never goes out. It’s such an easy-to-style, but one of the edgier and fashionable hairstyles for women of all ages!
The best product I’ve found for long lasting, touchable volume is Moroccan Oil Root Boost. I just apply it lightly to the roots and use a round brush for extra volume while I blow dry. For heat protection (and since I live in Oklahoma, the humidity protection it provides is also a plus!), I always use Amika Style Shield right before I run the flat iron over the ends.
#82: Liberated Grey Hair Shag
This look is sassy, messy, fun, and chic. This look is very low maintenance. The babylights brighten her color and emphasize the shaggy layers with some disconnected layers, especially around the face. This haircut on thinner hair is recommended for women with an oval, triangular, or heart-shaped face. All lifestyles would be perfect for this look as long as the person is less detailed and more into the lived-in, undone, messy hair look.
#83: Color That Gray Bob
I would describe this look as fun and spunky, something that says age is just a number and that every women has their own kind of sass. I highlighted with Joico Blondelife and lowlighted her with a Joico Intensity mix of magenta and pink. When styling, I used the Loma Volumizing Mousse and round-brushed her out.
I feel this style is completely ageless. Anyone can enjoy this look, but I mainly recommend it for anyone with really fine hair looking for a fuller look. The cut is suitable for most face shapes, and the pop of color is for a client looking to embrace their spontaneity.
#84: Layered Wavy Bob
Opt for a short layered bob with waves. It will give your hair texture and body because if you have very thin fine hair. This wavy bob is great for many hair types. With this cut, you can use different lengths depending on the shape of your face.
For a rounder face, make sure the length is slightly below the chin. For someone with a long and thin face, try to keep the length at chin level. Overall, this is a great look for many face types as well as different types of hair. This particular short layered cut requires styling. The time of styling always depends on how thick the hair is. To style, use mousse before blowdrying and a bit of dry hairspray at the end.
#85: Soft A-Line Bob
I would describe this look as a soft A-line bob with minimal layering. My favorite part of cutting a graduated bob is the skill and precision it takes to create a beautifully balanced shape. This cut and style are ideal for medium to fine hair textures. This cut will naturally build weight in the crown, which is best for creating volume and lift. In this particular bob style, I have added a texturized fringe to bring a youthful feel to this classic shape. Bobs are minimal styling maintenance but often require more frequent cuts to maintain the shape.
#86: Super Short Crop of Elegance
This is a short, chic cut that has effortless style and elegance. My favorite thing about it is how it compliments the bone structure and head shape. I recommend this look for women with thick, straight hair that doesn’t want to fuss too much with their hair but still love style. To maintain this look, use products like a styling lotion or cream that you like and rub it back through your hair when damp, then brush through and air dry or blow dry.
#87: Layered A-Line Bob With Lowlights
I would describe this look as a layered A-line with light stacking in the back. This look gives her the freedom to wear her hair straight, and curly, or put some fun twists into it (my personal favorite). Keep in mind, shorter hair is more maintenance and does need to be kept up because it will fall flat and out of shape faster than long hairstyles typically do.
#88: Youthful A-Line Bob with Wispy Bangs
Opt for a youthful a-line bob with wispy bangs. It’s a chic, easy, bouncy, and voluminous cut. It can be sassy or classy. You can add texture to it to give it a piece-y look or wear it straight and more professional.
This pixie isn’t for women who are very thin in the front around their hairline or women who are thinning on the top of their head. You need the length in the front to be able to achieve this look. This cut isn’t recommended for older women with thin hair that easily falls flat. This hairstyle is very easy to style if you want to just wash it and go, round brush it under, or even put some curls in it.
#89: Textured Bob With Soft Layers
This is a sharp but textured bob with soft layers to give the illusion of more volume. Use Natalie Anne New Heights Dry Volumizing Powder on the roots to create more volume with a soft hold. Through the ends, use the Natalie Anne Undone Perfection Dry Texturizing Powder. It gives a soft hold but creates the soft movement of the layers.
This layered bob is for women who don’t like to fiddle with their hair too much or have a busy lifestyle because you can toss your head over, use the recommended product, and walk out the door. It suits older ladies with fine hair to give them more volume and movement, and it helps them not to weigh the hair down. This short cut is highly recommended for older women with round faces to give a more elongated look.
#90: Chic And Sporty for Over 60
This short haircut for women over 60 is chic and sporty, yet elegant. Its shape and ease of movement make it a look that is very versatile. Although this bob is short because of its layering and texture, a lot of movement and height can be created, allowing you to transform this cut into different shapes. This allows you to change your hair to suit your look for that day or evening.
For more texture, use a light spray wax. For more volume, a dry matte texture spray can be used. Of course, a hairspray to finish is always a must for that extra hold! Because of the shape of the style (being that it has volume through the top and sides, yet is tapered through the neckline), this cut is wearable for most face shapes. The fact that it’s short and layered makes it easy to work with and style, as well as keeps it versatile. Most hair types will work with this look as well.
#91: Eccentric Feathered Bob
This look is very eccentric. The layering on this bob haircut helps out with volume. My favorite part is that after I am done blow drying this style, I then do a fast blow dry to create more bounce. This shows the layers beautifully.
Creating this exact style depends on the individual. If the client has thick hair, I recommend using MoroccanOil Smooth Lotion to blow dry and MorrocanOil Molding Cream to piece out the layers. If the person has fine hair, it’s best to use a volume mousse and follow up with MorrocanOil Molding Cream. This look is really great for all women who don’t like to spend to much time on their hair. Any woman with any hair type can pull off this style!
#92: Fresh, Flirty and Versatile
This look is fresh, flirty and versatile! I love how it accentuates her face and her profile. It’s uplifting and updates her whole look in just a few snips! My favorite thing about this look is that she can wear it scrunched for a relaxed weekend look, or she can wear it smooth and elegant for a wedding or special event.
This cut can be easily modified for a variety of different face shapes since the length, and the face-framing can be adjusted. For narrow faces, you might cut your hair at jaw length to add visual width. For wider faces, you might shoot for shoulder length. This draws the eye downward and can also help those gals who have a softer jawline that they prefer not to highlight.
#93: Edgy Pixie Cut
Go for a short edgy pixie. My favorite thing about it is that it’s probably one of the most versatile short hairstyles for older women. This picture only shows one of the many ways this cut can be worn. You can also push it forward and down for more of the classic pixie look or style it all up toward the center to make a fauxhawk with it.
This cut takes minutes to style, so if you don’t like spending that hour or two on your hair in the morning, this look would be perfect for you. The only thing is that you have to be willing to come get it trimmed every four to six weeks to keep it in the perfect shape. I highly recommend this cut for anyone with confidence or if you are looking for a boost. Start chopping!
#94: Versatile Bob
I would describe this look as versatile. The underneath is disconnected, so there is no trouble with uneven hairlines or those fine unruly hairs found in the nape. This look can be styled smooth, curly or textured. I recommend this look for ladies with medium to fine hair with medium density. Thick and coarse hair is ok but may need to be cut differently. This style offers not only a wide range of styling options but also a large selection of color options. This look is perfect for anyone who wants a style with multiple options and manageability.
#95: Stylish LOB
This look is classic with a bit of fun and sass! I love it because it is easy to maintain while looking stylish and relaxed. I recommend using a light texture spray/volumizing spray while the hair is wet to give it some grit and texture. After the blowout, I used a 1-inch curling iron to bend the hair and finished with a light workable hairspray for hold.
This look is great for low-maintenance women with fine to medium hair types. Dimensional hair is best to show more of that textured look. It styles quickly and easily for people who live a busy lifestyle. You do not have to try too hard to make this style look great!
#96: Classic Pixie
It’s a very sleek, sassy, and classy pixie. The warm tones and dimensional blondes complement her complexion and beautiful freckles. I recommend this look to a client that maintains a type of smoothing treatment such as a GK Keratin treatment and/or a relaxer. Women with any face shape can rock this style as long as they have confidence. This pixie is perfect for the woman over 60 who wants to take less than 30 minutes to style her hair each day.
#97: Elegant Graduated Bob
This is a bob cut with graduation that is both elegant and modern. It’s a great look for independent, strong, confident women who don’t want to settle for “grandma’s hair.” This look is classic and feminine. The bob cut never goes out of style, and with different techniques, it becomes more modern. This cut looks good on all women. It can be worn straight when you want the face to appear thinner. If the face is already thin, just create layers.
#98: Attractive Silver Strands
I would describe this look at timeless and stylish, but with a twist due to the edgy color. The silver gloss color and root shadow effect give the style an updated and modern feel. My favorite thing about this look is how effortlessly stylish it is.
To maintain this color, I recommend L’Oreal Professional Color Corrector for Blondes. It protects your blonde highlights from brassiness with the anti-yellow Vitamino Color A-OX Color Corrector Blondes Cream. Your blonde hair color is corrected and any yellow highlights are neutralized, leaving behind a pure cool blonde. Any silver-correcting shampoo/conditioner is crucial.
#99: Asymmetrical Flair
I would describe this look as playful and modern. My favorite thing about this asymmetrical pixie cut is the smile she gets having it. The asymmetrical shape adds an element of flair that compliments her natural color, texture, and personality. This is one of the most ageless short hairstyles for older women. It works best on a lady who is on-point with regular appointments, as it requires regular upkeep. It’s not matronly, yet short enough that it is easy to style. So often, as we age, hair gets shorter because it’s easier to manage. This cut lets that short hair be more expressive. This can be a wash-and-go hairstyle if desired. Coarse hair would be a good candidate for ease of styling, and those with fine hair will find they need to use more product to get the same look.
#100: The Short Shag
This is a variation of the short shag haircut with soft, undone texture. This is a great cut for women with fine hair who want body and fullness. The airy choppy layers are also a great complement to square jawlines.
To style, use a volumizing mousse at the root and blow dried it in with a round brush, focusing at the crown to get plenty of volume. Then, use Kevin Murphy’s Doo.Over and sprayed the mid-lengths and ends to get a separated look. This look is all about the texture and to amp it up, use Doo.Over because it has the texture of a dry shampoo with a touch of hold.
#101: Triangular Bob
This cut has been made by utilizing the triangular bob technique. I personalized the line to give a short and sharp shape on both sides, which is the part that I love. It gave me the freedom to enhance my client’s features. This will sit this way for at least five to six weeks, therefore, if the client would like to maintain a straight hair line, she wouldn’t need any particular recommended products. However, if she wants to play with this style, a clay wax product is actually able to create movement in order to achieve a funky modern style.
I recommend this look for older ladies who want to give a firm shape to their features. It would suit all of those who have slim and gentle features. I wouldn’t suggest it for those who have thick hair, but rather for those who have shockwave strong features as it would drastically expose their cheekbones and jawline structures.
#102: Chin-Length Stacked Bob
Feel a youthful thrill with a freshly layered, graduated chin-length cut. Some wispy bangs in front will surely complete this rejuvenating look!
#103: Long Side Swept Bangs
A great short hairstyle idea is to add long side swept bangs with a tapered neck that blends up to volume-enhancing layers at the top. The front is kept longer for a stunning side bang that frames the face beautifully. This look is very soft and wearable! If bangs seem to bother you when you’ve had them in the past, opt for short bangs above the eye or longer ones that you can easily tuck behind your ear.
#104: Thick Wavy Hair
This side swept, short wavy bob is super cute and a great idea for a more formal short hairstyle. Lock in your look but keep it soft and flexible with Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Touchable Weightless Hairspray. It smells great, too!
How to style short hair for older women:
- Section up half of your hair so you can access the bottom half of your hair easier.
- Grab a 1-inch curling iron and curl the under part of your hair.
- Drop down the top section of your hair and continue curling until your entire head is curled.
- Use a flat iron to smooth bangs over to the side.
